The 10 Most Popular Swimming Pools of 2020

If ever there was a summer to dream about adding a swimming pool, it was the summer of 2020. In fact, searches for swimming pool design and construction pros on Houzz were up 334% in June 2020 compared with the previous year. And now is the time to start planning for summer 2021. For a splash of inspiration, check out the following countdown of the most popular pool photos uploaded to Houzz in 2020.

10. Strategic Use of Grass

Pools are often surrounded by a sea of tile, pavers or decking. But around this clean-lined pool in Elviria, Spain, the pros at Iddomus used grass to add soft texture and swaths of green, providing a lovely contrast to the white architecture and hardscaping.

9. Integrated Spa

One popular pool trend that came up a lot in 2020 was integrating a spa into the pool design. This Fort Lauderdale, Florida, pool by Van Kirk & Sons Pools and Spas features a spa on the left and a Baja shelf on the right. Fitting all three water-filled parts together and surrounding them with coping creates a clean, modern rectangle design.

8. Side Yard Splendor

Architect Greg Swedberg of 2Scale Architects made the most of this corner lot in Houston by placing the pool in the side yard. Garden beds and planters run right up to the coping, creating a beautiful environment around the pool.

7. Low Country Views

This pool and deck design connects a home in South Carolina’s low country with the beautiful marshes beyond. The pool’s infinity edge creates a nice transition between the two. Designer Margaret Donaldson chose furniture that complements the architectural materials and gives the space a resort-like look.

6. Courtyard Setup

With clever site planning, architect Lloyd Lumpkins created a courtyard feeling in this Dallas backyard. The main house and pool house surround three sides of the pool.

Nathan Fell Architecture

5. Long Sliver

The pros at Nathan Fell Architecture capitalized on a narrow lot in New Orleans with this design. The long, narrow pool is perfectly sized for swimming laps. And the proximity to a covered lounge and open-air patio make it easy to be a part of the party while cooling off.

4. Maximized Miami Backyard

Contractor Alfredo Scheer helped a couple of snowbirds pack a lot into their small Miami backyard. And he did so in a pleasing way that doesn’t feel packed in at all. The pool measures 12 by 22 feet, and the surround includes a sunny lounging space, a pergola-shaded lounge, a separate hot tub and an outdoor shower. Scheer even turned the couple’s favorite elephant statue into a clever umbrella stand.

3. Well-Concealed Above Ground

This small pool on a compact urban lot in Marseille, France, has a clever design that hides the fact that it’s above ground. La Nostra Secrets d’Intérieur used decking to create a lovely surround with integrated seating.
